Stakeholder Value Chain Analysis
Also called Value Stream Mapping, Value Chain Analysis helps identify ways to create value for all the stakeholders with an interest in the outcome of the project. This analysis includes both how to create value for internal stakeholders as well as how to create value for the product or service end-user.
Timing
We conduct stakeholder value chain analysis early on during Discovery in order to identify business requirements. Value chain analysis normally is done before the interview stage in order to provide background and context for one-on-one conversations.
Methodology
Stakeholder value chain analysis is best done with a working group of the key internal stakeholders in order to ensure buy-in and to bring a variety of perspectives to the process. The working group identifies all possible end-user groups as well as all other stakeholders that have or may have a direct stake in the outcome of the project. For each end-user group and for each stakeholder, the working group establishes key goals as well as the possible interrelationships among goals.
Benefits
- Identifies and targets the right people to research and the best research method to use
- Ensures that all requirements are captured for all possible stakeholders
- Makes inter-relationships and processes explicit
- Identifies potential conflicts or negative interactions
- Identifies potential dependencies or points of leverage
- Help de-risk design decisions later in the project by understanding associated trade-offs
Duration
Lapsed time depends on the number of stakeholders and end-user groups, the complexity of the chain and normal scheduling issues. Normally, expect 1 to 2 weeks for stakeholder value chain analysis.
